HEALTHCARE INNOVATION SCOOPS MAJOR PRIZE
An innovation that could save doctors time and give patients access to clear, accurate and personalised information about their care has scooped a prestigious national award.
Medscribe is the brainchild of Nottingham man Dr Henry James, who learnt to code as a hobby. The Medscribe platform uses AI to transform doctor’s notes into patient-friendly documentation at the click of a button.
Now, the team is looking to use this recognition as a launchpad, seeking the right investment partners to expand their impact on the healthcare sector.
Henry, 24, recently graduated from the University of Nottingham, where he developed the idea with support from Dr Matthew Tranter from Birmingham and Volodymyr Chapman from Melton Mowbray.
Medscribe participated in the University of Nottingham’s Ingenuity Impact competition, with prizes provided by EIBF. And on Friday 8 November, the team picked up the Startup prize at the EIBF Champion of Champions Competition at the Royal Academy of Engineering in London.
The Medscribe team expressed their delight at winning this national award, describing it as both an honour and a pivotal moment in their journey.
After picking up the award, Henry said: “It’s been a really lovely couple of days, with lots of really interesting people. We’ve been working remotely, and this has been the first time we’ve met and gelled as a team. The mentor feedback was incredible.
“The idea behind Medscribe came from Matt and I’s experience as doctors. We both share the same frustrations with the amount of paperwork we’re required to do, the clunky computer systems we use, and the impact this has on our patients.
“Colleagues we shared it with really liked it, so I continued working on it, got a couple of smart friends on board and we started a business as a result.
“The impact of Medscribe is clear – doctors who have tried our product agree that it would save them time, reduce their cognitive load, and allow them to send patients home with more accurate, personalised, information regarding their care. Patients will be able to receive information about their health more quickly, and in language that is easy to understand.”
Medscribe’s AI-driven platform automates labour-intensive tasks like discharge summaries and clinic letters, helping doctors and nurses save time and focus more on patient care. The system’s doctor-designed AI not only improves efficiency but enhances accuracy, delivering better outcomes for both clinicians and patients.
Reflecting on the win, Henry added: This award has been a huge confidence boost and serves as a springboard for us as we start exploring the right investment opportunities. With strategic partners, we’re excited to expand Medscribe and bring these benefits to more healthcare providers and patients.”
Medscribe will also receive mentoring from business leaders who are members of the Sainsbury Management Fellows network, plus CV packages from PurpleCV and entrepreneurial books from Cambridge University Press and Double your Price, an award-winning book by David Falzani MBE, which covers how pricing works with practical insights, tools and actionable guidance.
The event, hosted by TV presenter and engineer Rob Bell, was the culmination of a year of EIBF-sponsored enterprise competitions held across UK universities, with thousands of undergraduate and graduates taking part.
Each year, EIBF champions business education for engineers and supports universities by giving them grants to award prizes to engineering students who develop ideas that can make a positive impact on society.
