The Mayor’s Entrepreneurs Competition – 2021
Back to CompetitionsLSBU supports student applications to The Mayor’s Entrepreneurs Competition (TMEC). TMEC is a prestigious competition to demonstrate a combination of engineering and entrepreneurial excellence. Despite numerous applications, the Engineering School had not yet had an applicant get into later stages of the competition. To rectify this an embedded programme introducing enterprise to engineers has been developed, supported by the Engineers in Business Prize Fund. The goal is to support as many quality applications as possible to go into The Mayor’s Entrepreneurs Competition. Called Design and Practice, the level 4 core module for undergraduate Engineering Students equipped engineering students with design discipline, creativity and problem-solving skills. This is the first major initiative to support students in entering external enterprise competitions. Three hundred students took part in the module, working in teams to develop an idea. The programme culminated in a Pitch Party in front of a panel of university academics and student entrepreneurs who chose our first Engineers in Business winners. £3,000 worth of Engineers in Business Prizes were awarded to multiple students including the Gold, Silver, Bronze, Highly Commended and People’s Choice winners. Gold Winner: Streetcharge
Talha Syed, BEng (Hons) Mechanical Engineering and Khaled Sad Saoud, MEng (Hons) Mechanical Engineering – £ 600 Engineers in Business Prize
Streetchrage is a smart charging platform embedded into pavements, to provide charging points for electric vehicles. In addition to winning the Engineers in Business Gold Prize, the Streetchrage team went on to win the Judge’s Choice award at the Mayor’s Entrepreneur competition and received £20k prize to further develop their idea.
Silver Winner: Smart Device Accelerometer
Andrew Chisholm, BEng (Hons) Electrical and Electronic Engineering – £400 Engineers in Business Prize
The Smart Device Accelerometer is a smart device for motorists, that uses sensors and G-force to detect the presence of potholes.
Bronze Winner: Aura Transit
Sophia Jarrett, Electronic and Computer Systems Engineering and Thomas Marshall, BEng (Hons) Electrical and Electronic Engineering – £400 Engineers in Business Prize
Aura Transit is a ventilation system for the underground. Reusing waste heat and filtering it to provide cool clean air.
