Big Ideas Competition – 2024
Back to CompetitionsEngineering and computer science students from Teesside University were challenged to ideate around the UN17 Sustainable Development Goals. |
First place: Paintmate
PaintMate is an AI-powered robotic vertical structure painting system designed to tackle complex and hazardous painting tasks. Utilising cutting-edge AI technology, the system autonomously navigates and paints vertical surfaces with precision, making it ideal for high-rise buildings, bridges, and industrial structures. It eliminates the need for traditional scaffolding, significantly reducing project costs and risks associated with working at height.
Equipped with a robust robotic arm and state-of-the-art sensors, the system adapts to various surface types and geometries, ensuring an even coat across diverse materials. AI algorithms analyse the surface in real time, optimising paint application and adjusting techniques to suit challenging environments. This adaptability is particularly advantageous in areas that are difficult to access or hazardous for human workers, such as tall structures, narrow alleys, or locations exposed to extreme weather conditions.
The robotic painter’s compact and mobile design minimises disruption, avoiding the need for walkway closures and allowing operations in busy urban environments without obstructing foot or vehicle traffic. It’s not only a safer alternative but also an efficient solution, speeding up project timelines with consistent, high-quality results.
